At an individual level, to achieve health and safety requires three steps:

  1. Knowledge/Understanding of the correct procedures,
  2. The correct tools/equipment and resources (including time) to do the job properly,
  3. The correct behaviour to: a. Follow the correct procedures using the correct tools/equipment and resources b. Not take risks / shortcuts in the event of items 1 or 2 not being available!

This course assumes the learners employers have a mature health and safety system that delivers steps 1 and 2, and empowers their employees to not take risks or shortcuts should the procedures of resources required to fulfil them be absent or lacking.

Objectives

The course content is detailed below and includes:

  • Ice breaker - an exploration into the effects on individuals of a workplace accident (victim, family, colleagues, company)
  • Reasons for Health and Safety - Human, Economic and Legal
  • Errors and violations, types, definitions and examples (from delegates)
  • Gambling with Health and Safety
  • How can we reduce errors
  • Getting to the root cause of Human behaviour
  • How can we monitor human behaviour
  • Behavioural Safety Champion - Changing Behaviour and leading by example.
  • Dealing with failures of procedures and tools/equipment and resources
  • Role of the Health and Safety Committee
  • Personal Commitment
Method

The course is classroom based and will consist of trainer led activities and desk top exercises
