Objectives
By the end of this course the participants will be able to:
- The implications of water regulations and D.G. commissioner standards on performance, records and customer service.
- General legal understanding with regard to current Water and Street Works Acts.
- Growth, demand patterns and the need for storage including reservoirs, water towers and underground tanks.
- Water quality requirements, potential sources of contamination and the maintenance of standards throughout the system covering chemical, microbiological and aesthetic issues.
- The physical components of the distribution system comprising pipes, pumps, valves etc covering the important design, operation, repair and maintenance concepts
- The need for flow and pressure measurement and how this can be effected using metering.
- Familiarisation with distribution equipment to include pipework, valves, hydrants, jointing, tapping and service connections.
- The importance of controlling and detecting leakage, including current methods and equipment.

Pre Course Requirements
Participants should bring with them a scientific calculator and suitable clothing for demonstrations in a workshop environment. Evening work will be included.
Who Should Attend?
Staff, typically of technician level, with little previous experience of the distribution function whose work requires them to have a technically based understanding of the subject.
