This unit is designed to provide learners with a working knowledge of the key principles of environmental and legal issues as they pertain to the water industry.

Objectives

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Identify the relevant sources of law in Europe and the United Kingdom.
  • Explain the role played by the regulatory agencies in the UK in developing current legislation and practice within the water industry.
  • Explain the role played by central government in developing current legislation and practice within the water industry.
  • Explain the role played by pressure groups in helping to develop current legislation and practice within the water industry.
  • Explain current regulations as they apply to the collection, treatment and distribution of water.
  • Explain the current regulations as they apply to the collection, treatment and disposal of waste water.
  • Explain the current regulations as they apply to the collection, keeping, treating and disposal of waste material, including duty of care.
  • Explain the current environmental regulations as they apply to the shipment and transportation of waste material.
  • Identify the essentials of a contract.
  • State a legally acceptable definition of a contract.
  • Identify the relevant remedies arising from a breach of contract.
  • Distinguish between a contract of service and a contract for services and state the legal implication of each type of relationship.
  • Identify and explain situations in employment which could be regarded as unlawful.
